Ithaca NY- A much anticipated showdown between the top two boys lacrosse teams in Section IV played out Tuesday evening as the Corning Hawks met the Ithaca Little Red. Forget the chilly, blustery, rainy conditions, these teams came ready to play. Or, at least it seemed that way. Kyle Clarkson got the Hawks on the board first just over a minute into the game with an unassisted goal that delighted Corning fans. Little did they realize their cheers would be stifled until the waning moments of the first half. Between that time Ithaca would build a 7-2 lead by intermission, followed by a seven goal assault by game's end and finish with a 14-4 victory. During the game the Little Red seized every opportunity, taking control with a barrage of shots and goals and a blanket defense led by Senior Winston Wenham and outstanding Goalie play by Max Yavitt.Ithaca improves to 10-1 while Corning falls to 8-2. Horseheads NY- Corning Hawks Girls Lacrosse Coach Kim McNaney was concerned about the team's defense prior to Wednesday's meeting with Horseheads. Message to Coach....everything looks good...the offense may sell alot of tickets this season based on their performance at the Raiders Lacrosse complex. Led by Senior Mallory Frysinger's 5 goals and 1 assist, the Hawks burned the twine for 20 goals and limited the Raiders to 4 scores, three in the first half, and were never threatened. Michelle Schwartz of Corning finised with six points(4 goals/2 assists). The win snaps a one game losing streak.
Endicott NY- Prior to this season's staart Corning Hawks Coach Bob Streeten might have reason to be concerned about his offensive firepower. Corning NY- If Friday's Lacrosse win was a tale of two halves, Corning Coach Bob Streeten may have opted to play the first and forget the second. The Hawks built a 6-1 lead as they headed to intermission, spreading the scoring around as Kyle Clarkson, Tanner Morse, Mike Vaughn, and Brandon Griffin particpated. Vestal, though, had plans of their own, fighting back to score 5 second half goals, and, thanks in part to Corning not taking care of the ball, the Bears certainly created some duress for Hawks fans. Perhaps the younger members of the Conging team may have lost focus for a while, but, the team rallied in the 4th, added three more scores, and, aided by the clock, held off the Bears for a 9-6 decision. Corning improves it's record to 2-0, Vestal drops to 2-1. Up next for Corning, a road trip to Union Endicott Tuesday.
